February is the month of hearts. From the vibrant reds of Valentine’s Day cards and red roses to the quiet beat of our own hearts, this month reminds us of the profound significance of love and health. While we celebrate Valentine’s Day with chocolates, flowers, and special moments, it’s also the perfect time to focus on your Heart Health.
Matters of the Heart: The heart is a powerful symbol of love, yet its physical importance to our well being cannot be overstated. February is Heart Month, a time to raise awareness about heart health and the steps we can take to keep our hearts strong. For seniors, heart health is particularly vital as we age. Taking heart health for granted can bring additional risk for cardiovascular issues.
Love Your Heart: Practical Tips for Heart Health - Caring for your heart doesn’t mean making drastic changes. Small consistent habits can lead to big results. Here are some effective ways to keep your heart healthy;
Stay Active: incorporate physical activity into your daily routine. Activities like brisk walking, swimming, yoga or just simple chair exercises can help strengthen your heart and improve overall circulation.
Eat Heart Heathy Food: Choose a diet rich in fruits, vegetables, whole grains, lean proteins, and healthy fats like those found in avocados and nuts. Foods high in fiber, such as oatmeal and beans, are also great for heart health.
Hydrate: Drinking plenty of water helps maintain proper blood flow and keeps your heart functioning optimally. Aim for eight glasses a day unless your doctor advises otherwise. If you don’t love the taste of water, try adding a splash of lemon or orange for added flavour. Herbal tea is also a great option.
Quit smoking: If you smoke, quitting is one of the best things you can do for your health. Seek support if needed, there are free programs available at your local health clinic or health unit. It is never too late to benefit from stopping. Ask your pharmacist or doctor for some recommendations that you could select over the counter.
Limit Alcohol: While moderate alcohol consumption may have some heart benefits, overindulging can lead to high blood pressure and other cardiovascular issues. Stick to the recommended limits.
Manage Blood Pressure and Cholesterol: Regular check ups with your doctor can help you keep these key indicators in a healthy range. Take medication as prescribed and follow dietary guidelines to support your goals.
Get Quality Sleep: Poor sleep and sleeping habits can increase the risk of heart disease. Aim for 7 hours of quality sleep each night and practice routines and good sleeping habits. Consult a healthcare provider if you experience sleep issues like sleep apnea. Shut off all screens an hour or two before going to bed. Try reading or listening to music or meditation to relax.
Control Stress: Stress can negatively impact your heart, so find ways to unwind. Meditation, deep breathing exercises, hobbies, or spending time with friends and family can all help reduce tension.
Maintain a Healthy Weight: Carrying extra weight can strain your heart. Work with your doctor or a nutritionist to find a plan that works for you.
A Heartfelt Reminder: This Valentine’s Day, as you celebrate love, take a moment to honor your heart. Share a laugh, embrace healthy habits, and spread love to those around you. When we take care of our hearts, our hearts take care of us to ensure that we live a long and heart healthy life.
Sending you all love and best wishes for a Happy Valentines Day!
